Jacqueline Yarborough of Hampton, Virginia (VA) and Marion Benson of Chesapeake, Virginia (VA), were involved in a serious car accident on May 28, 2009 and had to be airlifted to the hospital from the accident site on I-664, according to the dailypress.com.

Both women were not wearing their seatbelts and the impact of the collision caused them to be ejected from their vehicles. A third car was involved in the accident, but the driver did not suffer any serious injuries, likely due to the fact they were wearing a seatbelt.

As a personal injury lawyer with over two decades of experience, I’m always concerned about the safety of others. I’ve represented numerous clients involved in serious car accidents.

I’m also a commuter, so I practice safe driving measures and implore all drivers to do the same. Wearing a seatbelt is the simplest way to help ensure your safety in case you're involved in an accident.

Not only is wearing a seatbelt essential to improving safety, it’s also the law.

Virginia (VA) code § 46.2-1094 states “Occupants of front seats of motor vehicles required to use safety lap belts and shoulder harnesses…Each person at least sixteen years of age and occupying the front seat of a motor vehicle equipped or required by the provisions of this title to be equipped with a safety belt system, consisting of lap belts, shoulder harnesses, combinations thereof or similar devices, shall wear the appropriate safety belt system at all times while the motor vehicle is in motion on any public highway.”

So when you’re on the road, be sure to buckle up.
