drunken driving A Norfolk (VA) man has been charged with drunken driving in the wake of a nighttime crash last weekend that killed two of his passengers, the Virginian-Pilot reported.
Richard B. Freeman was allegedly speeding when he crashed his BMW into a tree on Granby Street, Norfolk police told the newspaper. The accident happened at about 2:15 a.m. near Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center in the 6100 block of Granby Street at Kingsley Lane.
Two passengers died in the crash: Lauren Kok, 22, of Staten Island, N.Y. and Cameron Richardson, 25, of Chesapeake. Richardson was in the front seat and Kok in the back seat, police told the newspaper. Three unidentified people survived the crash, police said.
Freeman, 24, lives in the 8000 block of Albemarle Drive in Norfolk.
About 13,000 people died in 2007 in crashes where the driver was alcohol-impaired, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The organization also reports that three in 10 will be involved in alcohol-related crashes at some point in their lives.
